Plus Size Model – for the larger woman

November 6th, 2009 admin No comments

plus model 1

this is the most amazing show.  For the larger, curvier woman (ie size 14 and above) a career in the public eye as a model or actress may seem to be out of reach.  Well. Chenese Lewis says no.  Having succeeded herself, she wants to convey to others the message of acceptance.  Large is not ugly in her eyes, large is not something to be shunned.  Here we have a different notion of beauty and reality.

Body image is something that wracks our culture.  It has always been a blight for the young women, but even today, men seem concerned with their skin tone, muscle tone, and general appearance.  It is almost as though we are elevating the exterior over the interior, valuing what we perceive with our senses, rather than trusting our instinct and gut feeling about a person.  The cult of the exterior is dangerous indeed.

this talk / interview show is wonderfully refreshing.  Produced rather spasmodically (two or three times a month) there is a wonderful archive of 30 shows going back a year.  The shows themselves are an hour long, and usually have 3 guests.  It keeps things moving, and provides a prism of opinion; a big advantage over 1 hour 1 guest shows.

the host is interested, without being over-forced, leading the discussion well.  Truly wonderful and inspiring; we are all the same underneath.  Spirits cloaked in a body’s garb.

Be Bold Podcast – working in the non-profits

October 12th, 2009 admin No comments

be bold podcast

for those interested in working in the non-profit sector, this is the podcast for you.  It is a monthly release that is basically a question and answer session between the above two faces.  Lara (left) answers the questions, and Britt (right) is the host.  Issues such as scoring your first job outside college, how to bridge a career into the non-profits, and how to get internships are all discussed.

many feel the drain of working in corporate America / (insert country).   It is an existence tied to the share market, and the values are narrow and self-interested.  For those who feel the call of helping others, working outside of this is a must for salving one’s conscience.  After all, there is more to life than figuring out how to peddle *more* and *more* goods and services; many of which may not contribute to ultimate quality of life.

Freelance Radio – liberating the individual

October 7th, 2009 admin No comments

the internet has enabled untold levels of freedom for the everyday man.  Work-from-home has become a genuine reality for many people today.  If you have a skill (programming, web design, writing, or project management) you can ply your trade from almost anywhere in the globe.  Just an internet connection gets you plugged into the wider economy.

Freelance Radio is the official podcast of the Freelance Switch website; shows come out every two weeks, and feature a panel discussion.  Shows focus around a particular topic: recent episodes have dealt with Managing Family Life, playing email and phone tag, and Finishing the Deal.  These are fascinating topics, and are a glimpse into a different world of money and work; one in which you take control and ultimate responsibility.

Freelancing isn’t for everyone; you need to be a social spider in the genuine and authentic sense; you need flexibility and a certain open-ness of personality.  But for those willing to take the leap, it is a truly liberating act – maybe the greatest act of defiance there is.  Freelancers rejoice!
