The Daily App Show – all your iPhone Apps

October 28th, 2009 admin No comments

jerad

with 100 000 apps and counting, the iPhone has become one of the fastest and most successful digital ecosystems ever.  Reminiscent of the early days of shareware on the pc, when small programs were distributed for little or nominal cost, the App Store has become a goldmine for developers – looking to share something creative and zany in a small screen size.  Sifting through this plethora of gold can be daunting.

well, lucky we have Jerad here as a guide.  He has been diligently reviewing apps since the very early days; producing quality talk through videos of the best finds of the day.  All the apps featured are paid, so let that be a warning up front.  If you like what you see, you’ll be handing over some small change.

the video reviews are between 3 and 5 minutes in length, and the view of the iphone screen is clear and unhindered.  Jerad talks through the features, showing off the various options, and even making a fair fist of the games while he is speaking.  The versatility and creativity of the various apps is most impressive.

This is a very enjoyable show, done in the right spirit, and is informative, entertaining, and leads to a direct outcome (ie, you purchasing the app and feeling empowered :-) ). Great work.

FilmTrailers – all the latest

October 17th, 2009 admin No comments

Films are the cultural artifacts of our time – they form a neat package (coming under 2 hours for a time-pressed age), are accessible widely through cinema and then ubiquitous dvd, and are subject to critical and popular opinion.  It is not for nothing that imdb is one of the powerhouse websites of the world.  Films, in the end, are about stories concerning the human creature; how it survives, loves, grows, and challenges for power.  Films are about US.

so films are important.  Opinions too are important.  But what the industry truly thrives on is the hype.  And so we come to that curious artifact indeed – the Film Trailer.  What could be seen as a 90 second film condensed out of a 90 minute package, the Trailer is a curious beast indeed.  How to entice with the best scenes, yet not give everything away, how to tell a mini-story without spoiling the Greater Whole.  Cutting a trailer is an art in itself.

FilmTrailers is a regularly updated podcast that pushes out about 5-6 of the latest trailer releases each week.  The site is run from the UK, so you will see a lot of french cinema being represented which makes it a differentiating point for US and Australian audiences; a taste of wider culture if you will.  Most of the trailers are of good quality, but aren’t HD; in fact, a small number came across as low-res, which was a bit of a disappointment; considering that the visuals are the prime draw of a film.  A small quibble nonetheless, for this convenient podcast delivery.

afraid of being cut out of the loop?  not connected with the zeitgeist of the day?  Like it or not, viral videos have become a cultural touchstone, being referenced in the media and even in some episodes of South Park.  These vids often accumulate millions of views in a couple of days.  They work their way around – seeding our consciousness.

Best of Youtube is a twice weekly video podcast that gives you the latest in viral, in full.  Apart from a too-long opening static screen, that’s all you get – just the clip as is.  No fuss, viral delivered.

the best in funny, weird, and outright strange.
