Kotaku Talk Radio

November 9th, 2009 admin No comments

this podcast is fairly new (3 months old) and is devoted to gaming.  Maybe seeing the unrivaled success of the Joystiq Podcast, these guys too, are jumping onto the Podcast Bandwagon.

what marks out the Kotaku podcast is that it is run through BlogTalk Radio; that is, it airs live, like a traditional radio program, and takes calls from the public.  This interactive aspect is unique (as far as I know) in gaming podcasts.

the podcast is weekly, and dishes out the usual news, views, and short reviews.  The hosts are lively and thoroughly engaging.  My own understanding of the gaming world is rather sketchy (no xbox, no ps3 here) but I am fascinated by this mainstream activity.  Having grown up on the teat of 90’s pc games, the evolution of this past-time is rather mind-boggling.

gaming is a way of playing out dis-empowerment … of becoming the hero of your own story.  It is a fascinating phenomena indeed.

The Video Game Jocks Podcast

September 29th, 2009 admin No comments

one of the perils of popularity is selling out. When money floods in, you become beholden to certain interests, start censoring yourself. You start watching what you say, what you write, and before long, you become part of the establishment group – you’ve essentially become another brick in the media standard wall.

that’s why we have blogs and podcasts. Here is a venue for new voices to spring up like golden flowers; without fear of vetting or checking. One begins, and one goes and finds one’s audience. Now, many big blogs and podcasts had humble beginnings. But the money has corrupted their approach and message. Not so with this podcast. Going over 150 episodes strong (they stopped counting after podcast 100), the Video Game Jocks Podcast remains true to what it is; that is, playing games and giving an honest opinion.

There are four hosts (Nick, David, Vinny, and Paul) and they keep the chat rotating easily. The podcast keeps to a simple talk format without injection of too much extraneous material, and represents a pure strand of podcasting – just talk and opinion from a bunch of guys. Shows run from 60 to 90 minutes long, and have a weekly release schedule. There are many gaming podcasts out there, but few that remain true to their roots. Thoroughly enjoyable.
